AD Classics: The Farnsworth House Mies van der Rohe

In 2005, docent Bill Shapiro developed the Farnsworth House PLUS tour as a celebration of the career of Mies van der Rohe, the influential architect who introduced Modernism to Chicago. The tour starts at 860–880 North Lake Shore Drive for a look at the two towers that helped define Chicago as a leader in Mid-Century Modern architecture. From there, the tour continues to Crown Hall at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), which is widely considered to be Mies’ finest work.

The Edith Farnsworth House was the first single-family residence that Mies van der Rohe designed in the U.S. after immigrating from Germany. His career was a long and patient search for an architecture that would be a true expression of his epoch’s essential soul, the Holy Grail of German Modernism. He perceived our period as the era of industrial mass production, a civilization shaped by rapid technological development forces.

The Farnsworth House Interior

The home embodied the philosophy and language of modern architecture down to every detail. It was one of the purest examples of modern architecture that had been realized and constructed up to that point in history. The Farnsworth House is such an influential structure because of the way in which it represents a specific design ethos that Ludwig Mies van der Rohe attempted to inject into everything that he designed.

Architect

The house has a distinctly independent personality, yet also evokes strong feelings of a connection to the land. The levels of the platforms restate the multiple levels of the site, in a kind of poetic architectural rhyme, not unlike the horizontal balconies and rocks do at Wright's Fallingwater. We spent an hour or so on the Historic Tour of the inn on a Saturday morning and it was an incredible experience. Our tour guide was Kayla and all 5 of us in our party thought she was amazing! If you are touring the Farnsworth House, I recommend renting a car in Chicago and driving to Plano.

The structure that he designed could never have been integrated with nature, but it could exist within it. The outdoor environment in which the Farnsworth House is constructed is one that acts as something serene and external to the worries of the industrialized world. The architecture of the house represents the ultimate refinement of Mies van der Rohe’s minimalist expression of structure and space.

So, let’s have a look at why this building was built in the first place and the history around this now immensely famous Modernist residential building. The Farnsworth House is one of the most influential residential structures constructed using a Modernist style. The building is technically no longer called this and has instead been renamed to the Edith Farnsworth House, but for the sake of brevity, the shorter name will be used throughout this article. This detail, combined with the flat, continuous roof and the completely straight façades, make the house appear like a box which has been “slid” onto the structure of columns. Although it ended up being difficult to live in, the elegant simplicity of the Farnsworth House is still considered today as an important achievement in the international architectural style.

Flooding

If you are an Orange County property owner, you may be interested in the new loan program aimed at helping homeowners build an ADU on their property. Orange County Housing Finance Trust has developed a program to encourage property owners to invest in an ADU by providing access to low-interest, deferred, partially forgivable loans for qualified owners. Over the years, there have been several floods in the home, the worst being in 1996 and 2008. There have been others that breached the elevated terrace but thankfully subsided. With each flood, portions of the home needed to be repaired and reconstructed. The elevated level of detailing and care that Mies exhibited in the home was something that I had not fully appreciated until my visit.

After the founder of the Bauhaus, Walter Gropius, fled Germany in the wake of the rise of the Nazi Party, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe attempted to remain a little longer. However, thanks to the inherently internationalist ideas and concepts that the Modernist architects pursued, he was soon at odds with the powerful political party and also fled the country. The Farnsworth House’s interior is immensely simple in its general application. The idea behind many of the designs that Ludwig Mies van der Rohe developed was based on the maxim of “less is more”.

History

But the spaces for living flow freely into each other, and into the meadows and river beyond. He provides the occupants of his buildings with flexible and unobstructed space to fulfill themselves as individuals, despite their anonymous condition in the modern industrial culture. The materials of his buildings, industrially manufactured products such as mill-formed steel and plate glass, undoubtedly represent the modern era’s character. Still, he counterbalances these with traditional luxuries such as Roman travertine and exotic wood veneers as valid parts of contemporary life. The house’s main structural support consists of eight white vertical I-beams, which connect the rectangular roof and floor slabs with floor-to-ceiling plate glass. The structure is suspended on those beams some 5 feet (1.5 metres) above the ground and more than 8 feet (2.5 metres) above the Fox River, which lies just 100 feet (30 metres) to the south.

After the renaming of the Farnsworth House to the Edith Farnsworth House, it was decided to temporarily refurnish the house through an exhibition called “Edith Farnsworth Reconsidered” in 2021. The house has been furnished with Dr. Edith Farnsworth in mind, her life, and her untold stories. All of this was done while attempting to present a reflection of the aesthetic of the house in 1955, through old photographs.

Mies wanted to use architecture to help reconcile the individual spirit with the new mass society in which the individual exists. During the late nineteenth century, Plano and the Fox River environs were considered a “beauty spot,” attracting travelers and new residents – including several gentleman farmers and weekend cottagers. No doubt Edith Farnsworth was aware of the area’s rural character and natural scenery when, in 1944, she discovered the site of her future weekend house.
